About
Set in the heart of Zaragoza province, Calatayud is a town that masterfully blends history, art, and flavor. Known for its stunning Mudéjar architecture, Calatayud boasts impressive landmarks like the Collegiate Church of Santa María, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its intricate brickwork and colorful tiles. Stroll through its historic streets and discover a rich legacy shaped by centuries of cultural exchange.
But Calatayud isn’t just a feast for the eyes—it’s also a delight for the palate. The DO Calatayud wine region is celebrated for its robust reds, particularly those made from old-vine Garnacha.
On this day trip, you’ll be able to enjoy both sides of Calatayud while strolling around town and tasting the delicious wine at a local winery.

One of the most curious demonyms in Spain might be that of the inhabitants of Calatayud: bilbilitanos.
Bilbilis was a Celtiberian and Roman city located just a few kilometers from present-day Calatayud.
It was prosperous for a long time, though by the Visigothic period, only a few families still lived there.
It was the Arabs who gave the area its new name: Qalʿat ʾAyyūb, or “”the fortress of Ayyub.”” Some, however, argue that the name could actually be Qalʿat-alyahud, or “”the fortress of the Jews,”” due to the significant Jewish community in the area, almost as large as that of Zaragoza.
What is certain is that every culture has left its mark on Calatayud, whether in the form of archaeological remains, architecture, texts, place names, or gastronomy.
