The castle tells the story of the wars between Muslim and Christian kingdoms. Built as a Navarrese border outpost, its purpose was to control the Arguis and Riglos passes and launch attacks on the town of Bolea, a Muslim settlement on the plain at the foot of the castle.
Later, it became a monastery for Augustinian monks, although it was eventually abandoned in favor of Montearagón Castle.
The Castle of Loarre has served as the setting for several films: Valentina, directed by Antonio José Betancor and starring Jorge Sanz and Anthony Quinn (1982); Kingdom of Heaven, directed by Ridley Scott (2005); and the TVE series The Ministry of Time (2015–2020).
