Day Trip to The Royal Monastery of San Juan de la Peña and Santa Cruz de la Serós
About
Hidden within the rugged cliffs of the Pyrenees, the Monastery of San Juan de la Peña is a true gem of Aragón, shrouded in legend and history.
This breathtaking site, carved into the rock, tells the story of medieval Spain, from its Romanesque architecture to its role as a royal pantheon for Aragónese kings.
Step into its mystical halls, admire its beautifully sculpted cloister, and feel the serenity of a place once believed to house the Holy Grail. Let’s explore together this magical place deep within the mountains, and climb all the way up to the top to discover the new monastery, abandoned during the 19th century, which put an end to such an important part of Aragonese history.

San Juan de la Peña is inseparable from the history of the Kingdom of Aragón, but it also tells the story of the Early Middle Ages on the Iberian Peninsula.
The ruins preserved today date mostly from the 11th century, although it is believed that a small religious community already existed in that cave.
The surrounding area is mountainous, with dense forests and a harsh winter climate, but the region gradually became populated as Muslims advanced into the valleys and plains of Huesca.
Its importance was so great that it gained royal favor early on, eventually housing the Royal Pantheon, where monarchs of Aragón and Navarre were buried for centuries.
