Monasterio de Piedra (whose name derives from the river Piedra that runs through the property) was originally a 13th-century Cistercian monastery, though currently it is also a hotel and park complex. It was built by the ruins of a Muslim castle in an effort to colonise and evangelise a region heavily populated by Muslims, but life in the monastery was very harsh due to its location.
In the 19th century, the monastery was closed down and most of the properties were sold.
The church and most of the buildings became derelict. However, business opportunities in tourism and fishing brought life back to the area, and the new park and hotel were created with conservation and restoration of the heritage in mind.
